Description
Python 2 allows the use of "str" for both text and binary data. This facilitates the confusion of the two (distinct) types. It needs to be sorted out to support python 3

This isn't really an actionable ticket. Yes, the description is true. But what is the completion criterion for this task? It's not clear. It's too broad. We need finer-grained tickets that are more specifically targeted.
