If you're talking about REST in the sense of the Fielding dissertation, you
might try adopting the term "Hypermedia" instead:
http://www.designinghypermediaapis.com/
That said, as far as what "REST" has been colluded to mean, Rails most
certainly allows a ".json" filename extension to select the
application/json Content-Type (of course it also honors the Accept header)
