Servers don't say anything to each other anyway. Only storage clients
(gateways) need to talk to storage servers.

What does this mean? Servers don't create ...

Oh I get it. These things you're calling "server nodes" are what I
call "gateway nodes", right? You're connecting to these nodes over
HTTP on their web port and asking these nodes to upload or download
files or create directories? In that case your problems above make
sense, and the advice that I see from Greg Troxel and Shawn Willden is
good advice (see if the nodes are allowed by the network to open TCP
connections to one another).
