 Oh, I see that your {{{unicode_to_stdout}}} function is exactly like the
 builtin python one except that it uses {{{'replace'}}} mode.  That's
 interesting.  I guess maybe that __is__ an improvement over the builtin
 python behavior (for our particular uses), and it also provides a function
 where we can add further second-guessing of python such as falling back to
 {{{utf-8}}} or {{{utf-16le}}}.
